The Pregnancy Pact

i just finished watching the lifetime original movie The Pregnancy Pact. the movie is based on the true story of a small town high school where a large number of teenage girls (16 and younger) become pregnant in a short period of time. the film deals with a rumor that many of the girls became pregnant on purpose and made a deal with each other that they would all have babies together, as teenagers. true or not, that is not the issue i'm really concerned with. here is the reality of the situation: most teenagers will/do not wait until they are married to have sex.
the most important thing that adults can do for their teens (i hate they are constantly being referred to as children) is not only educate them about birth control and protection from STDs but also willingly provide them. if you don't want your daughter have sex and she confides in you, telling you she is planning on/or is already sexually active and wants to take measures to prevent pregnancy then i suggest you help her out for a few reasons. first of all she trusts you and if you yell at her and punish her then you will shut down any amount of trust between the two of you. second of all she will probably have sex anyway and without the proper birth control ad contraceptives she will be at risk for pregnancy and STDs.
but that isn't to say that adults are to blame. teenagers, if you are going to have sex, be smart. use condoms and/or other birth control methods. really think about the decisions you are making. girls are not meant to be mothers. women are. when you're 15, 16 or even 18 you are most likely not equipped to deal with something like raising a child. yes, i understand that it might be your only life dream to raise a family but there is plenty of time for that. i'm 18 years old and i can barely navigate the world in regards to taking care of myself let alone being responsible for the life of another.
i'm not an advocate for abstinence but i'm not an advocate for being sexually active as a teen either. i'm an advocate for smart and safe thinking before making decisions that can alter your life.

characters welcome

today i finished my 2nd week at sac city college and i've come to realize something. city colleges are full of characters. i suppose that 4 year universities are also full of characters, but they are quite different. here are a few that i've observed thus far.

1. The Baseball Douche-bag: he thinks he is the royalty of the school. he is not too tall, but very buff and carries around his plastic baby bottle which contains he daily protein shake. they travel in packs (including taking classes together) and usually have two first names like Justin Bobby or Timmy Smith.
2. Girl with Bad Extensions: she may not be smart but she is going to try her best to be pretty. that is why she decided to get extensions. so that her douche-bag bf (often a baseball player) can more easily pull her hair when they have sex. she usually comes with a fake tan and an extensive amount of brightly colored eyeshadow. watch out. you don't want to hear her scream when you step on her Juicy book bag.
3. The Ghetto but Good Person: let's not lie to ourselves. ghetto people tend to either scare or intimidate us (usually both). that is why these ones are such a sigh of relief. they may not speak proper english but "theys is helluh nice and stuff cause they don't play people and shit". they always come to class, they are usually on top of their assignments, they genuinely take an interest in talking to you. these are probably some of my favorite people at city college.
4. The Old Ass Annoying Woman: she has a rolling backpack and weird mosaic colored glasses frames. she always comes to class out of breath and takes up 3x more space than anyone else. this is not because she is fat (although she very well might be). no, this is because she has to put her rolling backpack somewhere easily accessible, drape her coat and scarf somewhere, and have space for her color-coded binder-folder-notebook for whatever class. and finally, she never shuts the fuck up and makes a lot of irrelevant comments that no one wants to hear.

i'm sure i will come across more throughout this semester. all i can say is, no wonder they have a whole tv show about community college.

winter musings

with this terribly stormy weather the past few days i've been nesting on my ikea futon for more hours than is probably good. however sad that might seem, there have been a few fun developments:

Weardrobe 100 i think that everyone should visit this fun site. it is 100 people with great wardrobes. lots of bloggers, models, photographers and students. i hope to be as fabulous as them someday (soon).

i started a tumblr for my more ADD, everyday (or multiple times a day), undeveloped thoughts. a link can be found to the left (next to all the cool things i think you should check out that i'm checking out).

i booked my trip to visit Portland! i'm going thursday Feb 11th in the evening and returning monday Feb 15th. i won't be in town for Valentine's day but that shouldn't really be a problem i hope. i never liked the (fake) holiday and don't think i really want to be a part of it now. although the economy is pretty shitty, so lovers, GO BUY STUFF!
